Check the top inch of soil with your finger. If it feels dry, water slowly until a little drains from the bottom. Basil and mint like consistent moisture, but they dislike sitting in a saucer full of water. In a warm, bright window, that usually means watering every two or three days, less often in winter.
Add a layer of coarse gravel or broken terracotta pieces at the bottom, about two centimeters deep. Then cover it with a piece of landscape fabric or a coffee filter before adding your potting mix. This keeps the soil from washing into the drainage holes while letting excess water escape freely.
Yes, as long as they get at least four to six hours of direct light. Choose shallow containers, around 15 centimeters deep, and use a loose, peat-free mix. Harvest outer leaves first so the plant keeps producing. In low-light rooms, a basic grow light makes a noticeable difference.
Leggy seedlings usually mean they are reaching for more light. Move them to a brighter spot or place a grow light just a few centimeters above the leaves. Also, avoid overwatering and keep the air moving with a small fan on low for an hour a day. This strengthens the stems.
Let the top layer of soil dry out between waterings, since gnats lay eggs in damp soil. You can also place yellow sticky traps near the pot and cover the soil surface with a thin layer of fine sand or perlite. This blocks the adults from reaching the soil to lay eggs.
Look for roots growing out of the drainage holes, or soil that dries out very quickly after watering. Gently lift the plant from its pot; if the root ball is a dense mass with little soil, it is time to move up one pot size, about 3 to 5 centimeters wider. Do this in spring for best results.
